CBSA Single Window Initiative (SWI) streamlines the sharing of commercial import data between the Government of Canada and the import community

March 4, 2019

The Canada Border Services Agency’s (CBSA) Single Window Initiative (SWI) streamlines the sharing of commercial import data between the Government of Canada and the import community with a “go live
date” of April 1st 2019.

The Customs release is a single electronic declaration Canada’s Integrated Import Declaration (IID). The IID contains the data required by CBSA and the nine other PGAs to make import-related decisions to
protect the health, safety and security of Canada.

The IID release balances the needs of government departments and agencies with today’s globally competitive business environment. Along with the CBSA, there are 9 participating government departments and agencies representing 38 government programs. Participating Government Agencies
(PGAs):

  • Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)
  • Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC)
  • Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO)
  • Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC)
  • Global Affairs Canada (GAC)
  • Health Canada (HC)
  • Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN)
  • Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC)
  • Transport Canada (TC)

KWE Customs Brokerage is proactively releasing shipments using SWI IID. Be advised many commodities imported in the past that were not PGA regulated HS codes may now be impacted by theSWI IID release. KWE Customs team findings are that many of the SWI IID data points are not
mandatory for release at this time but may be enforced in the future. KWE Customs team will contact importers directly for further information if required so there is no advance action required unless notified otherwise.
