What Does The Word Kintetsu Mean?
We all know that KINTETSU WORLD EXPRESS is the name of our company, and that of the other companies which are involved with international air freight forwarding. In addition, we know these are also part of the 176 subsidiaries which make up the overall KINTESU Corporation, located in Osaka, Japan.
However, many people have asked where the word KINTETSU came from or what it means. Actually, it is an abbreviation for, or an acronym of, KINKI NIPPON TETSUDO.
What does KINKI mean? Not what some of you may be thinking!! In Japanese KIN means "near", and KI means "royal residence". Therefore KINKI can be roughly translated as "near the Royal Palace". NIPPON means Japan. Therefore, KINKI NIPPON can be closely translated as the part of Japan where the Royal Family resides. Then what does TETSUDO mean? TETSU means "iron," and DO means "road". TETSUDO then means "iron road", or railroad. Therefore, KINKI NIPPON TETSUDO literally means the railway system in the section of Japan where the Royal Family lives.
KINKI NIPPON TETSUDO is, of course, the name of the grand parent company of all the KINTETSU group of companies, the KINKI NIPPON RAILWAY CO. LTD. The railway company services cities such as Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Kobe, which today are in the region collectively known as the KANSAI area of Japan. However, in earlier times, the Royal Family used to live in Nara and Kyoto, and thus the area was also referred to as KINKI NIPPON.
Now perhaps a little history. During the Tokugawa Shogunate (dynasty), the area/city which is now Tokyo, was then called EDO. This is where the Shogun lived. To prevent invasions from other powerful provincial Lords, and restrict the movement of people, security checking gates were installed on every road leading to EDO. One of the largest was the Hakone checking gate. As mentioned, the Royal Family lived in Nara and Kyoto at that time which was essentially in a westerly direction from the Hakone checking gate, as was Osaka and Kobe. In Japanese, the word KANSAI roughly translates as "west of the checking point". Following the fall of the Shogunate system, the Royal Family moved to EDO, which was subsequently renamed Tokyo. Today, the area which includes Osaka, Nara, Kyoto and Kobe is referred to as the KANSAI area. Out of respect for the past, and the original location of the Royal Family, the area is also still remembered as KINKI NIPPON.
Since the Railway Company started in Osaka, and serves the KANSAI area, why weren't these names used instead of KINKI NIPPON? Well, in fact, years ago they both were. The company was originally known as the OSAKA ELECTRIC RAILWAY SYSTEM. Then, as it expanded to include services in other western cities and towns in Japan, the company was briefly known as the KANSAI KYOKO (Express). However, the Japan National Railway System also established branches and lines in the KANSAI area. Therefore, to avoid any confusion as to which services or companies were which, the name KANSAI was dropped. Instead, the name which the area was originally known for and respectfully remembered as KINKI NIPPON, was officially adopted as the name for the railroad company.
Now, back to KINKI NIPPON TETSUDO and how or why KINTETSU was derived from it. Just like Americans, the Japanese like to use abbreviations (particularly we understand, in the Osaka area). Where we often tend to abbreviate by letters (e.g. KNR for KINKI NIPPON RAILWAY), the Japanese often tend to abbreviate by using only the sound of the first character which makes up each word. For example, KIN for KINKI, and TETSU for TETSUDO. Now since we are talking about people in Japan abreviating somethin in Japan, the word NIPPON was automatically assumed, and therefore not needed.
Therefore,
KINKI NIPPON TETSUDO
and not requiring Nippon became
KINKI TETSUDO
and abbreviated by first character sound became,
KIN TETSU
and said together became,
KINTETSU
which means, the KINKI NIPPON RAILWAY
